About the Kumquat Fruit
History
Kumquats, belonging to the genus Citrus and often classified under Fortunella, are small, oval-shaped fruits that are native to South Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. It was introduced to Europe in 1847, but can now be found all over the world. Kumquats are winter hardy fruit and can survive temperatures as low as -7◦C.
These unique citrus fruits stand out due to their size—typically about the size of a large olive—and their distinctive taste and eating method. Unlike other citrus fruits, kumquats are eaten whole, skin and all.
Tasting notes
The flavor profile of kumquats is a delightful blend of contrasting sensations. The skin is remarkably sweet, which is unusual for citrus fruits, offering a pleasant and mildly sugary flavor. This sweetness of the rind balances perfectly with the tartness of the flesh inside. The inner fruit, when bitten into, provides a sharp, tangy burst that is both refreshing and invigorating. The overall experience of eating a kumquat is a harmonious interplay between the sweet, aromatic zest of the skin and the zesty, acidic juice of the pulp.
